As a physical therapist I caution my back patients with using yoga when they are having current pain. Most lower back pain is associated with specific movements that aggravate the condition. For some, flexing the spine feels great and extending feels terrible. For others the opposite is true. Thus if you are going to do yoga, only do those stretches that feel good and that do not reproduce you pain. "Stretching through" pain will only make it worse.

Help!
I am intested in a better life and health.
My lower back tightens to the point where I have to sit if I walk too far. This has happened since I was a child. At times I grasp to the spindles of the bed until tension releases and I can sleep.
My right hip is turned and countless adjustments at the Chiropractic Office have helped but it is never permanent. I throw my right foot when I walk and it hampers a lot of what I wish to do.
I am overweight and need help with all the above.
Can my hip be corrected WITHOUT surgery?
Surely there is a cure and regimen which I will gladly do. Just what type of Yoga or OTHER things do you suggest? Anyone?
Thanks.

I actually recommend to my patients that yoga is an ideal method to maintain a healthy spine. IT may not always be best to remove your back pain, but it works well to keep you supple and flexible.

Back pain relief is an essential goal for those with back pain. You need to look at removing the causes and then adding in techniques such as yoga to maintain good spinal health.

Great article and hopefully more people will learn to care better for their spine.

I have taken yoga classes from Lillah and she gave me some great pointers. One of the mistakes I had been making, even after 15+ years of doing yoga, was not straightening my legs when doing a forward bend. After making the change she suggested, my hamstrings improved quickly.
