This is easy enough to do sitting in a regular chair. Part 2 of the exercise can be done in a chair of on the floor.

The piriromis muscle can get tight and put pressure on the sciatic nerve. This is what causes the pain in the butt, leg or numbness down the leg. Getting the piriformis to loosen up can be helpful.

This technique targets two areas of the body where people tend to have a lot of tension and stiffness. The first spot is right at the piriformis, often associated with sciatica and low back pain issues. The second spot, by the shoulder blades is associated the upper back and neck stiffness.

Have You Tried This?

Have you tried electrotherapy for chronic back pain or sciatica? TENS is probably the most well-known form of electrotherapy, but many find more long lasting pain relief with Interferential electrotherapy. Try it for yourself at no cost.

More Free or No Cost Pain Relievers

Tennis balls are just one way to help relief pain and tight muscles. There are many other simple and low cost (or even free) ways to make chronic pain more bearable. Without relying on drugs which may be toxic or have undesirable side effects. To learn more, fill out the form next to the video above.

Josh Rubin from East West healing shares with us in this video.

This one takes a bit of practice to get right, there are a lot of points to remember

Myofascial Stretching: The Piriformis

Lots of people suffer from piriformis syndrome. Some of the contributing factors inculde:

Weak abdominals or core muscles

Weak pelvic floor

Anterior rotation of pelvis

Gut dysfunction

Nutritional inflammation

Glutes become inhibited, leading to overusing piriformis

Training or workout incorrectly

Repetitive use issues

Instability seems to be more common than oversue. Consulting a chiropractor or other health professional can help you pinpoint the real cause of pain and stiffness in the piriformis, legs and/or lower back.

Start by Relaxing

Begin by taking a few long deep breathes, this instantly calms your mmind down and helps you to relax. Let go of the stress of the day.

This yoga set is helpful for detoxification, to improve mental focus, and a little care strengthening. Core strength is always good for low back problems like sciatica.

Easier Poses

The seated Pigeon pose really helps to open up the hips. The regular pigeon is one of the favorite yoga poses for sciatica, this version is a lot easier, and it can be done anytime. A good stretch for the piriformis muscle, a major culprit in sciatica pain going down the leg.

Firm Believer in this Exercise

I have tried this myself and it works great to get things loosened up. I first learned this movement in yoga class. When I saw this video, I knew right away, it was going on the website to share with people.

Enjoy the Relief

So enjoy the exercise video, and as with any exercise, if it hurts stop or back off. This movement should not be painful. It should actually help reduce pain. It really works into the piriformis muscle. A key instigator in sciatica discomfort.

In this video, Mr. Skeleton man, gives us an inner view of the workings of sciatica.

You can see exactly what causes sciatica pain.

Most sciatica pain issues start in the lumbar spine area, around the L4, L5, S1 discs. A disc bulge or herniation in this area, compromises the sciatic nerve as it exits the spine. You can clearly see these in the video.

What Causes Sciatica?

The Major Cause

The majority of sciatica problems are due to trouble with the discs. Once you know the true cause of your sciatica pain there are a number of things you can do to improve the situation. Chiropractic, inversion therapy, spinal decompression, stretches and exercises are just a few options. Interferential therapy can help with the pain.

Consult with your personal health professional to explore your best options.

The Other Cause – Piriformis Muscle

Another cause of sciatica, is tightness of the piriformis muscle. If this muscle gets knotted up it can cause pain all down the leg.

Sometimes the sciatic nerve actually goes through the muscle fiber of the piriformis. this situation is not very common, but can cause a lot of pain.

Understanding the Anatomy

Being able to see the anatomy of sciatic issues, can help understand the real cause of the pain.

The second part of the video shows a healthy disc vs a degenerated disc.

Special thanks to Dr George Best for making this video, and thanks to Youtube for allowing the embed code to be available to all.

Sciatic Nerve Can Become Entrapped in Several different Places Along it’s Path

Dr. Abelson draws out the path of the sciatic nerve right on the lovely model. This gives a great visual representation of where the sciatic nerve can have problems.

A variety of stretches and exercises are shown; each targeting a specific area.Sciatica — Kinetic Health – Video

Common Belief

Most people think sciatica comes from the entrapment of nerve roots in the lumbar spine area. Entrapment can actually happen anywhere along the full length of the sciatic nerve.

Piriformis Syndrome

Pressure from the piriformis muscle can cause sciatic nerve pain. The good news is stretching exercises can do a lot for people who have this particular problem. Some other things that may help include reducing caffeine – and thus muscle tension, and eating a less inflammatory diet.

Tight hamstrings?

Traveling down the leg, we have the hamstrings. tight hamstrings can also cause problems. The problem may even originate in the hamstrings, but cause pain in the back or down the leg into the calf/ ankle area.

Calf Area

The nerve actually divides into 2 paths at the calf. This presents another are of common entrapment.
